When you think of cruising, you probably imagine Caribbean beaches or Alaskan glaciers. My last cruise, though, couldn’t have been more different. I spent 11 days cruising around Japan on an American cruise ship, and there were surprises every single day - not just on the ship but on land as well. On paper, this cruise was a dream come true, but I was nervous. So many things could go wrong, and I was traveling 3000 miles just to board the ship. The ship, Norwegian Spirit, was Norwegian’s oldest and smallest, and I hoped I’d enjoy her as much as the newer bigger ships. I didn’t know who else would be on board, what the food or entertainment would be like, or if my busy schedule would work. For years, I’ve wanted to sail on the Spirit again - she was my first cruise ship, and I had so much fun. When I saw she was sailing in Japan, my dream destination, I knew I had to get onboard. I definitely felt that childhood excitement when I first saw the ship in Tokyo. Walking into the terminal was such a relief - it was really there! I’d once arrived at an event a day early, so now I triple-check dates, but I still never fully trust it until I see the ship with my own eyes. Embarkation was exactly how I imagined a Japanese process: efficient, friendly, and fast. I hoped this was a sign of good things to come, but as with any cruise, reviews were mixed. 7 Days on a Luxury River Cruise: An Inside Look at the Reality
I’ve just disembarked a European river cruise on an ultra-luxurious cruise line, the most expensive trip I’ve ever booked. The average price of a cruise like this, in the cheapest room, is around £500 ($650) per person per night. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it certainly wasn’t this. We had a very eventful trip, and I did things I’ll never forget. In the past, I’ve taken river cruises with budget lines and always had a great time. I like to travel as cheaply as possible, but when I saw a sale for a specific itinerary in July, I thought this was my chance to board. The cruise would usually cost double what I paid, and it’s rare to find a deal like that, so I wanted to see if it could really be worth that price. The cruise I booked was a roundtrip from Venice, and I was a bit nervous about traveling to this part of the world in the middle of summer. I was expecting it to be hot, busy, and without air conditioning, but I hoped I could still make the most of the included excursions. I wasn’t sure if I’d fit in, what to wear, or what to expect day-to-day, but I was excited to find out. Our cruise included flights from London and transfers to the port. We were met at the airport by the Uniworld representative and taken to our ship, the SS La Venezia. I knew that this ship had a troubled past, so I was eager to see how she had been refit.
